What does it mean that you're a "Certified Purpose Coach"?

In early 2018, Aaron Hurst, Co-founder and CEO of Imperative, launched the company's first Certified Purpose Coaching cohort. I was fortunate enough to be in it. I have been trained and immersed in the science of purpose. I have furthered my own purpose work, and have a deep understanding of the value of purpose. I have access to tons of resources and have learned specific strategies to transform you into a purpose-driven leader, and the groups of individuals you lead into a cohesive, aligned, and productive kick-ass team. Sound good?

How do I know if I qualify as an "emerging leader"?

You're an emerging leader if you have aspirations, opportunities, and/or inklings that you should be leaving a greater positive impact on the world––but you're just not sure how to go about doing it. You feel like you have more to contribute. You want to fine-tune your story. You want direction and clarity. Ultimately, you want purpose. And that's when you call me to help.

Do I have to be in an official leadership position to be a purpose-driven leader?

Not at all. In fact, you don't even have to work in an organization to be a purpose-driven leader. You could be a social entrepreneur, a contract employee, a job seeker, an artist, or a change agent within a company looking to make a bigger impact. In essence, if you say you're a leader, than you're a leader. You become a purpose-driven leader once you've done the work to discover your purpose.

How does your process work?

Once you've decided to become a purpose-driven leader, you take a ten minute Imperative purpose assessment. Then, I walk you through your results, and help you understand and own your purpose drivers and your leadership style. Your purpose assessment is the foundation of our work together. We then collaborate on strategies to implement and scale your purpose-driven leadership in your company and with your team. I give you constant support, feedback, and encouragement to lead with your purpose. Think of me as your strategic thought partner helping you be the best you can be.

Tell me more about the integration of purpose and story?

Think of your story as your life map––helping you understand where you've come from, where you are now, and where you are likely to go in the future. Think of your purpose as taking all that information, unpacking it, and creating a real clear strategy for how to use your purpose to most authentically serve others. Your purpose, in other words, arises out of your story; and you use your story to define your purpose.

Is purpose the same as passion?

No. Passion is the stuff you're interested in, and can be fleeting. Purpose, on the other hand, is consistent and innate––and a more accurate representation of who you are. This two minute clip sums up my thoughts on the passion/purpose discussion pretty well.

What exactly is innovative about purpose-driven leadership?

Purpose-driven leadership is innovative because it unearths your inherent traits, personal values, and intrinsic motivations that enable you to inspire, motivate, and influence others. When you are clear on why you do what you do, who you want to impact, and how you want to go about making that impact, you can't help but serve others. Deeply knowing your own purpose is the only way to help the people you lead discover theirs. Without purpose, "leaders" may not amount to much more than a bosses who tell other people what to do.

If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.
— Lao Tzu

Where and how does the transformation actually happen?

The transformation happens when you realize all the possibilities that leading with purpose gives you to change the world. When you know your purpose so well, have done the work to own your story, and are living and leading in total authenticity, you have transformed. Your transformation is measured by the increased quality of your relationships with your team, the greater impact you are making at work, and in assessing your professional growth. In essence, you know you have transformed when you reflect on how much better your life is since you decided to become a purpose-driven leader.
