Why is belonging so important?
Fundamental to the human condition is the need to belong––to know that our lived experiences are validated as true, and to feel connected to ourselves and others. Too often, however, I find that we experience and feel just the opposite––we are isolated, excluded, and disconnected from our colleagues and peers. Why is this?
I believe that there is a palpable lack of empathy, compassion, and genuine curiosity about other people in our communities and workplaces. The result? Too many of us are uninspired, unmotivated, and unable to show up in the world as our authentic selves and thrive.
In the workplace, this leads to a decrease in innovation, retention, productivity, and creativity. Socially, this lack of belonging deepens the chasm between “us” and “them.” In short, we are not fostering and growing the relationships that keep us fulfilled.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can find belonging––individually and collectively––and sustain an inclusive culture of belonging where everyone thrives. I believe this is a much better world to live in, and I’m on a mission to make it happen.
